Nerja: This Is Why You Should Visit This Amazing Place

Nestled along Spain’s Costa del Sol, Nerja is a picturesque coastal town that offers stunning views, and an authentic Andalusian experience. With its whitewashed buildings, beautiful beaches, and delicious tapas, it’s no wonder that Nerja has become a favorite among travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure. We visited Nerja twice, and in this blog we’ll share our experience and tips with you!

Where lies Nerja?

Nerja is located in the province of Málaga, in Andalusia. This charming town sits on the Mediterranean coast, about 60 kilometers east of Málaga city. It’s easily accessible via the A-7 highway, making it a convenient stop for those exploring the Costa del Sol with the car. The town is well-connected to Málaga Airport, which is just an hour’s drive away.

Best time to travel

Thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate, it is the perfect location all year. However, the best time to visit depends on your preferences:

  • Spring (March to May): The temperatures are pleasant, ranging from 18°C to 25°C, and the town is less crowded.
  • Summer (June to August): This is peak season, with temperatures soaring to 30°C and above. The beaches are lively, and there’s a vibrant atmosphere.
  • Autumn (September to November): The crowds start to thin, and the weather remains warm, making it a great time to explore without the summer rush.
  • Winter (December to February): If you prefer a quiet escape, winter is ideal. Temperatures hover around 15°C to 20°C, and you can enjoy a relaxed pace while still experiencing Nerja’s charm.

We visited Nerja both times in January. We had lovely temperatures, around 18°C, and we were even able to enjoy the beach and take a dip in the sea.

Best things to do

Nerja is more than just beautiful beaches; one of its famous sights is ”Bálcon de Europa”.
Let’s dive into the best things to do in Nerja!

  • Explore the Balcony of Europe – This iconic viewpoint offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. Enjoy the musicians, the sun and the amazing atmosphere.
  • Visit Frigiliana – One of our favorite activities! Frigiliana is a nearby whitewashed village known for its charming streets and traditional Andalusian atmosphere.
Planning to go there? Read more about it in our blog!
  • Hike in the Sierras de Tejeda Natural Park – Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking for scenic trails and wildlife spotting.
  • Visit the Nerja Caves – One of the most famous attractions in the area, these caves boast impressive stalactites and prehistoric cave paintings.

Where to eat the best tapas in Nerja

Tapas culture is an essential part of Spanish dining, and Nerja boasts some fantastic tapas bars. If you’re looking for an authentic experience, Calle de la Gloria is a must-visit. Located in the heart of Nerja, we chose for La Tasquita Del Sevilliano. This small yet cozy spot offers an array of delicious tapas paired with local wines.

How long do I need in Nerja?

The amount of time you need to fully experience Nerja depends on your travel style. The first time we visited Nerja, we stayed 5 days. We had plenty of time to explore the town itself, but we also went on daytrips to other cities as Málaga and Granada.
January 2025 we stayed in a super nice appartment in La Herradura, and headed to Nerja just for a daytrip.

Here’s a suggested itinerary for a variation of time:

  • 1 Day: If you’re on a tight schedule, a day trip is absolutely possible. You can visit the Balcony of Europe, stroll through the old town, eat tapas and relax at Calahonda Beach.
  • 2-3 Days: This is ideal for exploring at a more leisurely pace. After visiting the historic town, you can also visit the famous Nerja Caves, enjoy a tapas tour, and take a boat trip along the coast.
  • 4-5 Days: With more time, you can take day trips to nearby towns like Frigiliana, hike in the Sierras de Tejeda natural park, and fully immerse yourself in the local culture and beachlife.
  • 1 Week or More: If you want a blend of relaxation and adventure, a week allows you to explore everything while also taking time to unwind on the beaches. Daytrips to explore other cities are also great to add to your list.

Best beaches in Nerja

One of the most beautiful beaches in Nerja is Calahonda Beach. Located right next to the Balcony of Europe, this small but stunning beach is known for its golden sand and crystal-clear waters. It’s a favorite among visitors due to its central location and breathtaking scenery.

Calahonda Beach is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and even snorkeling. The surrounding cliffs add to its charm, making it one of the most photogenic spots in town. Because of its popularity, I guess this beach will be fully packed in high season. We were here in January and when it was pretty quit and we were amazed by the amazing views.

Eventhough Calahonda is the most famous beach, there are more beautiful beaches in this coastal town, that deserve a visit.
Burriana beach is a long strectched sand beach offering sunbeds and plenty of restaurants to enjoy a drink or some food. It is the perfect beach for families as it provides everything you need.

If you are looking for a more secluded beach, Maro Beach could be your favorite. This beach is close the the caves and to get there, you do need to be a bit adventurious. A 20 minute walk down the beach will bring you to a small pebble beach, with crystal clear water. Perfect for snorkeling and cooling down from your hike! Don’t forget to bring your water shoes though.
