Málaga, located on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, is a vibrant city that has everything you need for a citytrip or vacation. Málaga offers an impressive mix of attractions, from ancient landmarks to beautiful beaches and delicious cuisine. Where lies Málaga?

Málaga sits on Spain’s southern coastline, in the Andalusian region, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. As one of Spain’s oldest cities, it’s full off history. Its location makes it a perfect holiday destination, offering warm weather year-round, stunning beaches, and easy access to nearby gems like Marbella, Ronda, and even Gibraltar.

Best Activities to Do in Málaga

Málaga is packed with exciting things to do, whether you’re a history enthusiast, nature lover, or foodie. Here are some of the top activities you shouldn’t miss:

1. Explore the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle

One of Málaga’s most iconic landmarks, the Alcazaba is a Moorish fortress built in the 11th century. Its well-preserved walls and gardens offer breathtaking views of the city. Just above it, the Gibralfaro Castle provides even more panoramic vistas.

We decided to only stroll through the Alcazaba. We loved the peaceful atmosphere, and the amazing views of the city.
Tickets can be bought at the entrance for €3,50 each or a combined ticket for €5,50.

2. Stroll Through the Historic Center

The heart of Málaga is a delightful mix of narrow streets, picturesque plazas, and historical sites. Visit the majestic Málaga Cathedral, also known as “La Manquita” due to its unfinished tower. Walk along Calle Larios, the city’s main shopping street, lined with stylish boutiques and cafés.

3. Visit the Picasso Museum

As the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, Málaga proudly houses the Picasso Museum, showcasing a vast collection of his works. The museum is in a charming 16th-century palace, making it a must-visit for art lovers.

4. Enjoy Muelle Uno and the Port Area

Muelle Uno is Málaga’s modern waterfront promenade, filled with restaurants, bars, and shops. It’s a great place to take a relaxing walk, enjoy the sea breeze, and watch the sunset over the marina.

5. Jardín Botánico: A Green Paradise in Málaga

A 15 mintue drive will bring you to one of the city’s hidden gems: the Jardín Botánico-Histórico La Concepción. A lush botanical garden established in the 19th century. This tropical oasis truly can’t be missed if you love to be in nature. Wandering trought he Jardín, you’ll find plants from around the world, peaceful walking trails, and viewpoints overlooking Málaga. It’s the perfect escape from the bustling city and a great place to connect with nature.

We bought our tickets at the entrance for €5,20 and parking is for free.

Where to Eat (the Best Tapas) in Málaga

No visit to Málaga is complete without eating tapas! Here are some of the best spots to enjoy authentic Andalusian flavors:

1. Casa Lola

A favorite among locals and tourists, Casa Lola serves a variety of traditional tapas with a modern twist. Try their “montaditos” (small sandwiches) and the famous “ensaladilla rusa” (Spanish potato salad).

2. La Tranca

For an authentic, tapas experience, head to La Tranca. This lively bar is known for its traditional Spanish vibes, delicious tortilla, and homemade vermouth.

3. Pepa Revuelo Centro

Walking through the historic centre made us hungry, and while wandering around we found a free spot on the terrace of Pepe Revuelo. The food tasted delicious and the location and sun-soaked terrace made it the perfect place for a break.

How Long Do You Need to See Everything in Málaga?

We’ve visited Málaga more than once, but only just for the day. We love to explore the Andalusian region with our car and do a few day trips.

But if you are planning to stay in one place these are our recommodations:

  • A weekend trip (2-3 days) allows you to explore the main attractions like the Alcazaba, Picasso Museum, and the city center, while also enjoying some beach time.
  • 4-5 days give you enough time to visit lesser-known spots like Jardín Botánico and take a day trip to nearby towns like Nerja or Ronda.
  • A full week is perfect if you want to explore the city in-depth, visit multiple beaches, enjoy all the culinary delights, and take day trips to surrounding Andalusian gems.

Top 3 Beaches in Málaga

Málaga is home to beautiful beaches where you can relax, swim, or enjoy beachfront dining. Here are the top three:

1. Playa de la Malagueta

This is the most famous beach, located just a short walk from the city center. This beach can be a bit crowded in high-season, but it is perfect for a refreshing dip between the sightseeing and the tapas diners.
It has golden sands, calm waters, and plenty of chiringuitos (beach bars) where you can enjoy fresh seafood.

2. Playa de Pedregalejo

A charming beach in a traditional fishing neighborhood, Playa de Pedregalejo is perfect for those looking for a more authentic experience. The area is known for its beachfront seafood restaurants offering delicious grilled sardines.

3. Playa de la Misericordia

This long and less crowded beach is ideal for a peaceful retreat. It’s popular among locals and features a relaxed atmosphere, making it perfect for families and those looking to avoid touristy spots.
